Q. What brought you out here today?
A. The last time that I checked we still have a President who would rather be a king than a President, who ignores the Constitution and tries to govern via an executive order, ignoring the Congress, ignoring the courts. Until that changes, we’re going to be out here, making sure that people know it’s not okay.

Q. What do I want people to understand?
A. I want people to understand that we now have an authoritarian President who has just passed the Big Ugly Bill that has now funded ICE at nearly three times the annual budget of the FBI and has not encouraged them to uphold the laws. They’re going into people’s homes without judicial warrants. They are arresting people without showing their face or their badge number or even identifying what people are being arrested for, and if that was in any other country, we’d just call that a secret police. You know, ICE is SS. It’s just a different time.

Q. What would I like the caption under my photo to be?
A. Like everyone else out here, we’re not going away until justice is served and our civil rights are restored.

Q. What brought you here today?
A. I am one of the organizers of No Kings, Las Vegas. I’m on the steering committee in Indivisible, Las Vegas. We’ve been planning for this for quite some time. I’m here personally because I am sick and tired of a government that doesn’t work for it’s people. That it only works for the billionaires and the corrupt. I’m here because the regime is out of control their unconstitutional. They’re illegal activities by the minute. This is not what the Constitution had in mind. I would love for the constitution to actually be realized where we are actually equal and free.

Q. What does No Kings mean to you personally?
A. No Kings to me is more than a day. It’s more than a moment. It’s a movement that is powered by the people. It is a movement that is focused on changing things, fundamental change. Because there are so many things wrong that have allowed this regime to be in control. If you think about it, there are just a few hundred people in this country that control all of us, and that is bullshit!

Q. What does solidarity look like today?
A. Solidarity looks like all of us being united. We have a big tent and if you’re pro-democracy and anti-regime, then you have failed your people. (I suspect she meant to say that if you’re not pro-democracy and anti-regime, then you’ve failed your people. I’ve not been able to get clarification at this time.) I want to encourage everybody to do more, don’t just come out for one big protest. Get involved with Indivisible or another local grassroots because we do a lot more than protest. We want fundamental change in the country, but also very much soak in this city. We have been able to shut down one lane of Las Vegas Boulevard and it cost us almost $30,000. Because there are no free speech areas designated in this city and we need to change that. We need to change the laws and the codes, because the city is oppressing us and trampling on our First Amendment rights. So everybody should care about that no matter what side you’re on.

I interviewed the founder for the Handmaids of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Q. What brings you out here today?
A. “We’re here in protest against ICE. We want to see ICE abolished for all the damage that they’ve done to our country and here locally in Las Vegas. As everyone is well aware that their processes are extreme and they’re inhumane, and we need to put a stop to it.

So the Handmaids down here every other Friday at the ICE office, which is behind us and we will be standing here every other Friday until something is done. Whether ICE has been abolished or the people who are affected and detained by ICE are free.”

Q. So what do you want people to understand?
A. “I want people to understand that the Handmaids we are a nonprofit organization here in Las Vegas. We do a lot of community service and help with the community. Right now, our main focus is to help the immigrants that are affected and the US citizens that are affected by ICE right now, with food, clothing, grocery shopping, they feel very unsafe to be able to go out, because they’re afraid they’re going to be taken because of the color of their skin, whether they’re US citizens or not. We’re offering support services for that and also keeping watch of ICE and where they’re located and tracking them. We want to be here to ensure the community that we are here to stand for you when you can’t stand for yourself and be your voice where you can’t be heard.”

Q. How are you feeling about all of this?
A. “I feel hopeful, I see our community coming together more and more. We see a lot of organizations that are actually uniting and doing a lot of effective things together. We’re preparing here so incidences that have happened like in Minneapolis and Chicago and North Carolina do not affect us here, that we’ll be ready. The main primary focuses, I really love seeing all of the organizations get together to support our community and our citizens.”

Neither representatives from ICE nor the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department agreed to be photographed or interviewed at the time of this report.
